ngl i never finished the first game, my external hard drive i had it on got corrupted and i never dl'd it again, is this one a continuation or is a new story and new characters?

For the people that don't know company/ game type its Euro Jank with a big focus on story + characters + setting, so make sure to keep that in mind. Also lower budget.
Basically think of them as if they were remnants of the real Bioware that don't have that much money.

They also changed the combat apparently its more close to a almost turn based but not fully like Star Wars Kotor/"mmos", not sure why they did exactly but at least if they don't try to revert that change with a massive overhaul it means they can focus on the important things this is about ie story + characters including the choices to be made in them.

It should end up better then Current ""Bioware"" and their upcoming veilgard at any rate in every way although that bar is of course deep in the ocean let alone low.

It's called real time w/ pause. Was used in old Bioware games like Baldurs gate 1 and 2, and Dragon Age 1 and 2

ya but many people don't like calling it that or get confused by that name, since they put all the focus on the auto attacking (default attacks) unfortunately these days.
I would even say since you said bg 1 + 2 would add even more confusion since that plays/feels quite different to it.

BG is typically even called trpg (which has a massive amount of different types of gameplay) or irpg while DA is typically called crpg or wrpg even though those can all be mixed up so very easy especially these days.

Any ways what was important was me pointing out how it plays since that is what everyone these days looks at and somewhat understandable even for those that played the first since it changed a lot, it even had Pause though pretty sure they call the first game's type tactical pause while this one is more commonly called real time with pause.

Its just what they are lovingly called, a lot of them are pretty good games as long as you accept their jankiness.

This studio (spiders) and Piranha Bytes are the biggest two.

If want to try some of them I would say play-

Mars War logs then Technomancer (they same setting)

Then Bound by flame (though accept that it was going to have a sequel but never did)

Then other studio and start with their Elex 1 (ignore 2)

Then maybe look into the big and old Gothics + Risens see if they your type they focus more on setting above all and have weird leveling (like having to grind out a lot of money to learn to throw sand) -> were not really my thing but they have a fan base

Then finally of course finish it up with GreedFall 1 to maybe prepare for 2 (which maybe out by then and patched up by time of beating and maybe been shown to be good/bad and or worth it)

The first game was nothing to write home about and I've heard this one made some baffling changes like changing the combat to turn based.
EDIT: I have been most rudely corrected, it's not turn based it's "tactical pause" kinda like what you have in Dragon Age Inquisition in a way. Still a big change form the previous game.
